My super hero class

I sit here typing out this post enjoying a cup of trader Joes apple cider. Well really not enjoying because it's still 90 degrees outside. But it's fall and I am in love with this cider so the heats not going to stop me.

This post is going to be a little all over the place, but I haven't (really) blogged in a while so I'm sure you can understand.


First, I had a college student observe in my room. First of all this was seriously weird for me because I swear I was that college students a short while ago. (even though it was seven years ago now) Sitting in the back, nervous, taking notes and not imaging that I would ever be as good as the teachers I was watching. Now someone is watching me, taking notes when I say things. I wanted to run over and snatch those notes, and see what she was writing about me! I just wanted to make a good impression, I hope I did. I learned so much from the teachers I observed in college, I just hope she can learn something from me as well.

Now on to my super hero class. The second graders at my school learn all about heroes. We discuss famous historical heroes, family and community heroes, and even super heroes. this all leads to a third grade project where they go out into the community and do something heroic for those in need.

We talked about the heroic qualities in super heroes, that we also have in ourselves. Then we designed our super heroes using lakeshore learnings people shapes.

After they made their heroes they were super motivated to write comics books based on their character. I used some of the graphic organizers and comic book templates from Kelly at Teacher Idea Factory's Fun with heroes pack. 

Before I go I wanted to share one other thing. Does anyone else do a fun Friday type thing? When my kids fill up a bead jar (which happens every two weeks or so) We have a free period where they can read, draw, play games, do art etc. I have actually come to love this time. I use it as a time to get to know my kids better. I am not out there at recess with them, so this gives me a chance to better get to know their personalities and interests, who their friends are, etc. I usually choose a couple of kids and play a game with them, or water color with them, or read with them, whatever they are choosing to do. 

There is nothing better than good conversation while playing a game of mancala. I got this set a a thrift store for a dollar. I am LOVING the little animal pieces. We lined them up on the edge like they were going to the watering hole. The fish are in the middle. Fun times.
